Can an email address damage reputation?

February 23, 2010 1 Comments Growing Your Business

emailaddressesAll these email addresses have one thing in common - they are all advertising the wrong business! John is advertising Bigpond, Bill is advertising AAPT and Fred, Hotmail. I’m sorry to say it but having a generic free email account from any of these big names is not doing you any favours. The equivalent in stationary would would be to put your printer’s name on your business cards and letterheads.

Every good business owner knows that you need to push your business and brand in as many ways as possible, so why skimp on your email address? Having a generic email address looks unprofessional and does not shout credibility in anyone’s oppinion.

What’s Involved?

Setting up an email address specifically for your business is cheap and alot easier than most people think.

confusingemailStep 1:

The first step is to register a domain name which is simple, easy to remember and has your business name in it. For example, for iSonic we use the domain isonic.net.au. it is simple, easy to remember and recite over the phone, and fits on just about any marketing piece.

NOTE: Having an extended domain name is not reccommended (15 characters at the absolute maximum, 2-5 sylibols). For example having the domain:

anthonyandmargaretsworldfordermitologistsanddentistsptyltd.com.au

… It would be a little over the top. Some people try to counteract this by putting dashes where the spaces should be, however I would recommend to be a little more creative with the name and shorten it as much as possible. If you are unsure on how to do this, post your business name and possible domain name in the comments below and we, along with our readership, will come up with a few good ideas for you.

Step 2:

Once you have registered the domain you then need to have your email hosted, this is a simple process and can be done within minutes through iSonic.

Step 3:

Finally, you enter in a few details into your email client (about 3 fields) which are provided by your email host and you’re up and running! You are now advertising your business with your email address.

When I started writing my resume I definitely took this idea into consideration. I know people who have had childish e-mail addresses on otherwise professional looking resumes. Its kind of a killer in the business world. I can see why people may not want to get another email, because many of us have multiples already (among all of the other logins and what not stored on our computers/minds).
